Ultrasound and X-ray

Most diseases affecting internal organs cannot be diagnosed with just a physical exam. While doctors have a trained eye, they need the assistance of diagnostic tools and procedures to diagnose illnesses in your pet. At Abbey Animal Hospital, we have a well-equipped in-house laboratory that can perform ultrasounds, X-rays, bloodwork and more.

Does an ultrasound or X-ray have negative effects on pets?

No, these procedures cause no relative harm or side effects. However, they do expose pets to radio waves, similar to X-rays and diagnostic procedures for humans.

Do pets need anesthesia to undergo an X-ray or ultrasound?

Pets don’t need anesthesia to get an X-ray or ultrasound as these procedures are non-invasive and harm-free procedures. If your pet has anxiety, they may need mild sedation to help them undergo the exam.

What preparation is required before such tests?

The only preparation required is for our team to shave the area that needs examination. It helps get a clearer image of the internal organs for doctors to examine and diagnose.
