Our veterinarians are fully trained to perform a variety of surgical procedures and to diagnose and treat most medical conditions that might afflict your pet.

Surgery

Operations that are commonly performed include spaying and neutering, wound repairs, lump removal, bladder stone removal and gastric foreign body removal. Your pet will be examined prior to surgery and if deemed necessary pre-operative bloodwork will be done. Our surgical suite is fully equipped with a wide variety of sterile instruments, and anesthetic monitoring equipment. We use time-proven anesthetic regimes to ensure the safety of your pet. All surgical patients are closely monitored by our licensed veterinary technicians and each patient receives post-op pain relief medication. If your pet’s condition necessitates the care of a specialist we are happy to arrange a referral.

Reproductive Surgery

We recommend that your pet be neutered or spayed at 6 months of age. Dogs spayed before puberty have a dramatically reduced risk of developing mammary cancer later in life. Male dogs that have been neutered have a reduced risk of prostate problems.

Dog Neuter

In the majority of male pups both testes are removed through a single midline incision. In some pups, one or both testes may fail to descend into the scrotum. The retained testicle may be located in the abdominal cavity or in the groin area. A retained teste will usually require an additional incision and additional dissection in order to be located and removed. The surgery is more involved and requires more time than a regular neuter and as a result there is additional cost. If your dog has a retained testicle, please speak with your veterinarian if you wish to get an estimate of the cost of his neutering surgery.

Medicine

The doctors at Abbey Animal Hospital have the capability to diagnose and manage a wide variety of medical problems. Bloodwork, urinalysis, and parasitology can be performed in our in-house laboratory making the results available the same day. Digital radiography and ultrasound exams are also done on-site with immediate results. This helps to make a quicker diagnosis and facilitates prompt treatment. In our hospital pharmacy we stock the vast majority of medications that might be needed to treat your pet’s medical condition. If necessary, patients can be hospitalized in our clinic. If 24 hour care is required then referral to a nearby emergency hospital can be arranged.
